City Environmental Debate Canceled

Sunday, October 1, 2017 - 8:50pm

The 1st Environmental Debate, slated for Tuesday October 3rd, has been canceled by the City of Gaitherburg. The City’s Board of Supervisors of Elections, who initially approved the debate to be held at City Hall, expressed concerns with the appearance of impartiality because one of the candidates running for City Council is an interim member of the Muddy Branch Alliance Board of Directors, one of the sponsoring organizations. While the debate planning team from the Muddy Branch Alliance and other sponsors took steps to ensure that no information related to the debate reached the candidate, these steps were not deemed satisfactory by the Board of Supervisors of Elections.

However, all the organizations who organized and sponsored this worthwhile event still believe that the Gaithersburg City Council candidates should inform the public on their views regarding important environmental issues. We will strive to achieve this goal. We plan to submit a subset of the debate questions, developed by the debate sponsors and local high school students, to each candidate. This will give each candidate the opportunity to address these questions and provide responses which will be posted on the Muddy Branch Alliance website.

Muddy Branch Alliance, Seneca Creek Alliance, Kentlands Foundation GO GREEN group, and Green Gaithersburg would like to thank the City of Gaithersburg for their support for what would have been the 1st Environmental Debate for City Council candidates.
